Revealed to Ṛṣi (Seer) Vasiṣṭha this popular and powerful mantra is practiced for protection from death like experiences, illness and most importantly, to gain a liberating understanding of death itself. Swami Dayananda Saraswati says – for the born, death is certain and for the dead, birth is certain. In this mantra Lord Rudra-Śiva is prayed to for the release from this birth-death cycle of Saṃsāra.

O Lord Rudra, may you nourish me in such a way that I will be free from Saṃsāra without any obstacles.
