The strong oral tradition of the Vedas was maintained by Vegāṅga (branch of Veda) texts called Prātiśākhyā & Śīkṣā. These texts are considered the 'nose' of the Vedapuruṣa suggesting that it is the 'life breath' of the Vedas which are essentially a sound system or Śruti. These texts constitute the main sources of Indian phonetics.
